USB dictation device or headset: a comparison for speech recognition
USB dictation device and headset compared for speech recognition: mobility, microphone quality, recognition accuracy and comfort as decision criteria.
Both USB dictation devices and headsets are suitable for speech recognition. The decision comes down to two criteria: mobility and microphone quality. Each type of device has advantages and disadvantages.
USB dictation device
A USB dictation device is compact and easy to carry. It is the right choice if you are travelling or cannot wear a headset. The microphone quality does not always match that of a headset, however, which can affect recognition accuracy.
One example is the PowerMic III with good recording quality. The Philips SpeechAir Smart Voice Recorder is a professional dictation device with high voice quality and simple operation. It is more expensive than the headset options but offers additional features such as notes and dictating directly onto the device.
Headset
A headset generally offers better microphone quality and therefore higher speech recognition accuracy. It is less portable than a dictation device and, depending on the model, more expensive.
The Jabra Evolve 75 delivers very good microphone quality and is comfortable to wear. More affordable models also work with speech recognition, such as the Mpow HC6 USB headset or the Jabra Evolve 40. Cheaper devices do not always offer the same sound quality and noise cancellation as more expensive models, so it pays to compare features and prices before buying.
Key points
- If mobility is the priority, a USB dictation device is the right choice.
- If recognition accuracy and sound quality matter most, a headset has the advantage.
- Affordable headsets also work with speech recognition, with some compromise on sound and noise cancellation.
The PowerMic III is available in the DEVACON shop. The speech recognition solution these devices are used with is described on the page ProDictate.
